The name Mappillai was given to this type of rice after a famous custom, where a bridegroom (Mappillai in Tamil) is asked to lift a heavy rock just to express his brutality . In order to gain energy for doing this action, the bridegroom is given the cooked rice to strengthen his get-up-and-go. Even today, this practice is being followed in many parts of Tamil Nadu.
